"contrary instincts?"?

Attention all English majors/professors! I'm doing a paper for my English cl dealing with "contrary instincts." I'm reading two different works, one by Alice Walker and the other by John Edgar Wideman. My question is what exactly is 'Contrary instincts'? And how would it apply to their works?!! Any help would be appreciated.
