Religion doesn't hurt but ignorance does?

A common debate topic in my sociology cl is whether religion had done more harm than good. Personally, I believe that religion has done more good than harm to society. Could you imagine a world without Jesus, Gandhi, or MLK? Or the cultural contributions made by religion such as art, music, etc.? When I was refuted by about 99% of my cl, I responded with "religion doesn't hurt but ignorance does." I thought I was pretty spot on. My clmates, however, thought otherwise. Not to start a flame war between atheists and theists(?) but what is your input to this?
