Why pollution from cars is less when using ethanol as a fuel instead of petrol?

Ethanol has a hydroxyl group which has an oxygen in it. So you can expect on combustion there will be more water released and less carbon dioxide released when compared to petrol which has no oxygen present in its molecule.
